Northwest vs. ZenBusiness

The two names that come up in every formation search, compared on the things that matter after the first year: renewal prices, what is actually included, and five-year cost. Prices checked November 8, 2026.

How This Page Makes Money, Honestly

LLCForming is funded by affiliate commissions. Right now the provider links on this page are plain links and we earn nothing when you click them. As affiliate partnerships are approved, links will be swapped for tracked ones and this note will be updated. Prices below come from each provider's own pricing page, checked November 8, 2026. Full disclosure.

The short answer

Northwest costs less over any horizon longer than a year, includes more in its flat price, and prices its registered agent renewal at $125 against ZenBusiness's $199. ZenBusiness is the better fit only if you specifically want its compliance subscription and dashboards, and you accept that its packages renew every year while its agent service is never included. The details, and the math, are below.

Where ZenBusiness genuinely wins

Compliance hand-holding. ZenBusiness built its product around the fact that owners forget annual reports, and its reminders and done-for-you compliance add-on are aimed squarely at that failure mode. If you know you will not track your state's deadlines, paying for the nagging can be rational, and our compliance guide shows what a miss can cost in states like Florida. ZenBusiness also presents a friendlier, more guided checkout, which matters to some first-time founders.

Where Northwest wins, and it is most places

Price structure. A flat $39 with the agent year included respects the customer in a way tiered pricing does not. Renewal structure: one renewal, at the lowest price in the category, with a 20-year no-increase track record. And focus: Northwest is an agent company, and the agent is the part of formation with real ongoing consequences, as our agent guide explains. ZenBusiness's agent is an add-on to a subscription business, and it is priced like one.

Who should pick which

The renewal schedules explain most of the five-year gap. Northwest has exactly one renewing item, the agent at $125, at a price it states has not risen in 20 years, and nothing in its checkout is a trial waiting to convert. ZenBusiness stacks renewals: the agent at $199 a year on every path, Pro or Premium subscriptions at $199 or $299 a year if you take them, and the Worry-Free Compliance add-on that starts free on Starter and renews at $199 a year if you keep it. None of those renewals is hidden, but they are spread across the checkout, which is how a $0 start becomes a $995 five-year path without any single dishonest step.

Northwest Registered Agent  |  ZenBusiness

Prices checked on each provider's own pricing pages, November 8, 2026. ZenBusiness Premium appears at $399/yr on some older pages; the current pricing page states $299/yr, which is the figure used here. Five-year figures are our arithmetic from the published prices listed above, excluding state fees, which are identical either way.

Common questions

Which one is cheaper after five years?

Northwest, and it is not close: $539 against $995 on the ZenBusiness Starter path, from the math in the table above. Take ZenBusiness Pro instead of Starter and the five-year total with agent service reaches $1,990.

Is ZenBusiness Starter really free?

The filing itself is $0 plus state fees, one-time. What Starter does not include is a registered agent, which is a $199 a year add-on at ZenBusiness, and its Worry-Free Compliance trial renews at $199 a year if you keep it. Free to start is not the same as free to run.

Does Northwest's price go up after year one?

The $39 formation is one-time. The only renewal is agent service at $125 a year, a price Northwest states has not risen in 20 years. There is no package tier quietly renewing behind it.

What does ZenBusiness give me that Northwest does not?

A subscription product built around compliance: reminders, dashboards, and a done-for-you compliance add-on, in a friendlier, more guided checkout. If you know you will not track your state's deadlines yourself, that hand-holding is the honest reason to pay ZenBusiness's renewals.

I already formed with one of them. Can I switch agents later?

Yes. You are never locked in to an agent. Every state has a change-of-agent filing, usually online and free or cheap, as our registered agent guide explains. File the change before the old service lapses so there is no gap in coverage.
